Arthemia is a premium theme by Michael Jubel Hutagalung of Colorlabsproject. First thing I noticed with this theme: excellent utilization of categories. It is designed to pull your best content forward through your best categories and latest posts. For this reason, it is set apart from the rest of premium themes. Let me explain:
As in every good magazine (in the print world), categories or “sections” are the bait for which readers get hooked. It is more than merely organizing articles but rather a display of what a reader can expect to read in one issue to the next.
Why should online be different? This is what Arthemia aims to do. The home page has a feature section (which is a category) that sits above the rest of the content. Inside this feature is a single headliner – which is your main attention grabber, followed by a scroller of your other “featured” posts. Right below it is a category bar – where it presents five categories of your choice along with a brief description. Inside the right sidebar – are the same categories but instead of a description – is the latest from that category. The general area is populated with the usual latest post. Note that all posts are accompanied by a standard thumbnail – which is very nice.
Other features of this theme that is worth mentioning:
- Automated Vertical Feature Scroller – feature posts scrolls upward every 3 seconds in the feature area in the homepage
- Color designate your categories – from the admin menu of the theme, you can designate a color schema for your categories. This will dictate the background color of headings and mouse over effects in the sidebar and category bar
- Diagonal backgrounds and borders – very subtle, light grey diagonal lines are used as borders and backgrounds in sidebar elements as well as main containers. This gives the theme a more “Web 2.0” look
- Auto-thumbnail creation –Every post in your blog will require a thumbnail. This will pay off a huge deal aesthetically in the long run. The auto-thumbnail feature will generate a thumbnail as long as you have an image somewhere in your post. This is especially useful for existing blogs.
- Random posts box displays post thumbnails – a different way of presenting your articles. Sort of like a gallery of your posts
- Video box for your video posts
So if you’re thinking about going magazine style, and plan on gettign creative with your post categories, Arthemia is definitely a theme to consider. Demo and documentation is available. Additional feature explanation and more in depth information is available at the theme website. Arthemia sells for $70 single site, $140 for 5 websites. There is also a developer pack that has no limit on the number of websites for $240.
